We’ve had a busy year, with its own fair share of challenges to deal with, but we’ve emerged at the other side of 2009 with our heads held high and in better shape than we’ve ever been, looking forward to the New Year and whatever it might bring. The latter half of 2009 went incredibly quickly, with several new national clients (and some local ones too), and we’ve got an order book and a half for 2010. Aside from our offices in Cornwall, we’ve now got a real office – not one of these virtual things – in London SW6, quite close to South Park (which amuses all the fans of the show in the office), and we’ve got some great plans to expand the company both at home and overseas (and I’m not talking about offshoring either) in the next 12 months.
So what’s the challenge? I hear you ask. To mark our 10th year, we’re going to offer a recent graduate a position within Slightly Different for three months, and if you prove yourselves worthy, we’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse. We’re not hypocritical so if you haven’t got a degree you can still take the challenge but boy are you going to have to prove yourself. One important thing – you’re going to have to be a graphic designer, which I know will be disappointing for everyone else but no pretending because we’ll know, unless you have hidden talents waiting to be exposed, in a somewhat Clark Kent / Superman kind of way.
Anyway, enough about pretend super heroes, we’re looking for the real deal, the Chuck Norris of design (or the female equivalent – Lara Croft? Uma Thurman?), and if you think you’re it, then let us know. You’re going to need to be able to demonstrate your ninja skills in the ancient arts of CSS and HTML, know your way around a CMS or three, be able to talk in 0s and 1s to our technical team, and have some knowledge of both PHP and Flash. If you’ve got that far, you’re half way there.
Then you need to send us an email before the 18th January telling us about yourself with some examples of your work – huge files should be linked – and five reasons why you are Slightly Different starting with the phrase “I’m Slightly Different because…”. At this point, you’re getting closer. Then we’re going to need to speak to you, although we’re only going to choose those who we think understand the Slightly Different way, and you’re going to have to come to us so you might want to get a map out to work out where we are before you send anything.
For the chosen one, the prize will change your life. We’ll let you use one of our chairs in our South West based design studio, you can bask in our reflective glory, and you can work with the SD team for three months on some amazing projects that will look good on anyone’s portfolio. We’ll show you the best techniques, involve you in every stage of a project from pitch to launch, we’ll ask for your opinion, you’ll get to make decisions, and above all else you’ll be respected for being an expert in your field.
As if this wasn’t enough, we’ll give you money at the end of every month, doughnuts occasionally, and on rare occasions you might even get taken out for lunch. You’ll be eligible to join the Slightly Different film club, have access to some of the best hands-on training with a growing agency, and you’ll get to say that you are a member of one of the best digital agencies in the UK.
So what are you waiting for? Change your life, change the rules, be Slightly Different. We’ve got a seat with your name on it.

I personally feel kind of pathetic when it comes to your post. I’ve worked with graphics and websites ever since 2006, but I’ve recently worked with graphics more since I am taking a class in school, but before it was like 5 graphics every 3 months or so. I also started getting into pure HTML last year, before that it was slight things here and there on Forums and MySpace. Also, I’ve started working with PHP a little in December, and have been working with it since, at least once a week. I’ve linked the site to this where you should be able to detect if I’m worthy or not. I’d like an opinion. Thanks.
